The “Typography123” class by Daniel Wenzel focused on experimental procedural type design. The course was divided into three parts: creating, reshaping and using type.
In Part 1, we were asked to design generative processes to produce shapes that were then used as letters.
In Part 2, my classmates and me were encouraged to experiment in creating a process to drastically modify existing letter shapes in order to generate a new typeface.
Finally, in Part 3, we were asked to use the typefaces from Part 1 and 2 to create different compositions and versions of album covers for a music genre of our choice. Mine was Afro Beats and I chose the song “Godly” by Omah Lay.

__________
Part 1 of the “Typography123” class by Daniel Wenzel: Designing generative processes to create random shapes. I chose to make “cacao powder explosions” on paper experimenting with different techniques, in this case wettening the paper first and blowing the cacao powder through a straw. This procedure created very unepected shapes that could later - after having been digitalised and bitmapped - serve as the basis for the design of a possible album cover for the chosen song.
Idea, Concept and Design: Cara Schanuel.
Guidance and Process Video: Daniel Wenzel.
Project realised within the Masters of Visual Design at ELISAVA (2020/21).
